“After starting my career as an assembly-line worker for General Motors, I was offered a Skilled Trades apprenticeship. A year later I accepted a new position at a small shop in Rochester as an apprentice, working during the day and going to school at night. It was a small shop, less than 10 people but I learned a ton and I’ve never looked back. I continued to go to college part time to take courses I needed to move up in my career. I’m 40 years into my career now, with the last ten years at ITT Goulds Pumps. ITT Goulds Pumps provides training and has endless career paths from shipping and receiving to Foundry technician, engineering, research and development with management/leadership opportunities. There is also the strong brotherhood of the Union Machinists at ITT Goulds Pumps. I’ve been a gopher, operator, machinist, toolmaker, CNC operator, setup, programmer, Supervisor, estimator, manufacturing engineer, teacher, project manager and everything in between. The stereotype of working in a dark, dirty environment has all changed through the years as the manufacturing industry continues to become more computer enhanced and high technical precision increases. Never a dull moment in this trade and it is very rewarding being part of the ITT Goulds Pumps team that makes things. I’ve put my kids thru college and bought a nice comfortable home for my wife and I. Rewarding career …give it a try..”
